U-Values

What is a U-value & why Does it Matter?

U value is a measure of heat loss, dividing heat lost in watts (W) by square metre of material, when the outside temperature (k) is at least one degree lower (W/m2k).

The lower the U value, the better the insulation.

The U-values of Spray Foam Insulation

Use My Loft’s sprayed polyurethane foam insulation creates a total seal, yielding optimal U-values at a minimum insulation depth. In fact, Use My Loft was specifically created to comply with building regulation objectives to improve energy efficiency and lower CO² emissions.

Spray Foam Offers Better U-values Than Conventional Insulation

With better U-values than wool insulation, spray foam insulation offers fantastic thermal efficiency, which means it can be applied at a much lower depth. Think of how much space cold roof insulation takes up, particularly with the new 300mm legislation – it essentially renders your loft useless. Use My Loft enables you to do exactly that, knowing that you’re assured excellent U-values.

Generally, you’ll need a depth of around 150mm to attain a U-value of 0.16 W/m2K, but a depth of only 40mm will enable you to achieve a stellar U-value of 0.40 W/m2K.

Use My Loft: U-Values

Basic U-values for Different Thicknesses of Sprayed Polyurethane Foam Insulation

At Use My Loft, we’re often asked questions related to the U-value of sprayed polyurethane foam insulation, depending on its thickness and structure application.

In order to calculate the composite ‘U-value’ we need quite a lot of additional information. For thin skin structures, however, such as asbestos, steel, aluminium, etc, we can give you a rough calculation by ignoring the effect of the substrate. The composite ‘U-value’ calculation can then be taken as the ‘U-value’ of the sprayed polyurethane foam insulation alone.

Foam Thickness (mm) K Factor (W/m2K) U-value (W/m2°C)
25 0.023 0.92
35 0.023 0.65
50 0.023 0.46
65 0.023 0.35
75 0.023 0.31
100 0.023 0.23

New legislation stipulates that you have 300mm insulation in your loft. You have two options:

Cold Roof Solution

  • Insufficiently heats space in winter.
  • Fails to utilise existing loft space.
  • Heats space even in summer.
  • Does not prevent pipes and tanks from freezing.
  • Gradually deteriorates – requires maintenance.

Warm Roof Solution

  • Combats new loft insulation regulations.
  • Creates thermally efficient space.
  • Efficiently distributes heat throughout your loft.
  • Excellent option to convert existing loft space.
  • Reduces aircraft noise.
  • Potential to further develop.
  • Utilises breathable membrane.
  • B.B.A approved.
  • Permanent - no maintenance required.
  • Low density open cell breathable insulation with a 25 year manufacturer warranty.
